To be "In Christ" is to have a personal relationship with him. This may seem strange to some since he is a historical person. However, Jesus predicted that he would be executed and would be raised from the dead. He is the eternal Son of God and communicates to people today spiritually.
Each human has a body, soul and spirit. The soul includes the function of the mind, will, and emotions. The spirit is what separates humans from the rest of the creation. A person's spirit gives them a moral consciousness. God is a spirit. God has created mankind with a spirit to enable communication and relationship with Himself.
We are not born with a relationship with God. We are separated from him by many things. He knows us, and understands us better than we do ourselves. However we must choose to enter the relationship that He offers.
There is a barrier between God and man. This barrier is one of moral values and tendencies. It is what the Word of God (The Bible) calls sin. The definition of sin is to fall short of God's standard of righteousness.
Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."" Universally, every person falls short of God's right standard.
Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Universally, every person's sin results in separation from God, which is death. The result of sin is eternal death in a place called the lake of fire. The Good News is that, universally, every person who receives the gift of eternal life through putting their trust in Jesus Christ shall pass from the status of spiritual death to life.
Romans 10:9 "that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. NKJV" Universally, every person must receive Jesus as the Lord and Master of their life.
This begins a new life "In
Christ". 2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a
new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
NKJV"
When Jesus was nailed to the cross, your sins were placed on
Him. He accepted the just penalty for your sin, so that you could have a life-giving
relationship in Christ. Faith is active trust in both His blood shed for you and
in His Lordship. 2 Corinthians 5:21 "For He made Him who knew no sin to be
sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. NKJV"
Through your faith in what Jesus did on the cross, God accepts Jesus'
sacrifice for your personal sins and you receive inheritance in the
righteousness of Christ.
Accepting this gift is a spiritual position you take to be "In Christ". You can transfer your trust for the forgiveness of your sins and the management of your own life to the Lord Jesus Christ, by a sincere prayer.
Prayer: Lord I come to you and lay my life before you. I choose to receive your offer of a new life and relationship with you through faith in Jesus Christ. I lay down my pride, my desires, and self-sufficiency to rely on your power and gifts. I ask forgiveness of my sins. I accept the blood of your sacrifice for the forgiveness of my sins. I do not desire to hold on to those things I cannot keep in eternity. I hereby turn my life over to you, Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, and the new director of my life. Thank you for forgiving my sins, and accepting me as your child. In Jesus' name, Amen.

"New Life in Christ"
Next comes the "freedom" part. When a person first accepts Jesus as the director of their life and His forgiveness of sins, there is a release of a great weight of spiritual heaviness. Confusion is removed. There is an inner experience of renewal. There is love and joy with Jesus as the focus of your new life.
After a while, old influences will attempt to bring you back to where you were before. But, the Holy Spirit will help you and a new period of spiritual and moral growth will start. Remember, you have entered a new relationship with the Father as His son. He will not let you go. Keep drawing closer to to the Lord in your thoughts and in the compassion of your heart. Satan can only try to deceive you into thinking that nothing has changed.
Universally, humans suffer from fear, guilt and shame. These are the "big three". These have deep roots into the soul, having grown in as a result of wrong choices and experienced trauma.
Each person needs to learn new habits. These are: 1) to pray daily , 2) to study your Bible daily if possible, 3) to participate in weekly fellowship with other believers in a Bible teaching church or fellowship, 4) to become functional in the Kingdom of God, discovering and using your spiritual gifts, and 5) to learn how to walk in "Freedom in Christ". This last habit involves seeking and responding to the Holy Spirit's on-going cleansing and rebuilding of your life (deliverance). It also involves learning how to exercise your authority as a child of God in Jesus' name.
